Isn't it time you gave your dog a bone? Here are some great recipes that you can make from scratch for your beloved four legged friends. Jericho, Jael and Mini are of course bone connoseurs, so use the easy rating system 4-paw rating system to see which ones they found the tastiest.

Easy as Barking Biscuits

This recipe is extremely easy and you can use common ingredients from your cupboard to make em!

3 cups flour
2 eggs
1T. garlic salt
Water

Preheat oven to 350 F. Mix flour, eggs and salt together. Add water until mixture is stiff and doughy. Roll out and cut into strips, circles or use your cookie cutters. Bake 15 to 20 minutes.

Peanut Butter Goodies

You may have to make a trip to the grocery store to buy the wheat germ, but these peanut buttery treats are worth it. Not that I would know.

1 1/2 c flour
3/4 c oatmeal
1/4 c Wheat germ
1/4 c Peanut butter
1/4 c salad oil
1/4 c honey
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 c water

Combine all ingredients and mix on low until mixed. Make into 1 tablespoon-sized balls and place on ungreased cookie sheet. Flatten balls to 1/4" using tines of fork. Bake at 325 F for 15 - 20 minutes, or until golden.

Furrkid's Favorite Treats

These will quickly become your pooches favorite treats too! The excellent ingredients that go into these biscuits are enough to tempt even you to take a nibble.

1 cup Rolled oats
1/3 cup margarine or butter
1 cup boiling water
3/4 cup cornmeal
1 tablespoon sugar
2 teaspoons chicken or beef instant bouillon
1/2 cup milk
4 ounces shredded cheddar cheese (1 cup)
1 egg beaten
2 cups all purpose or
2-3 cups of whole wheat flour

Heat oven to 325' F. Grease cookie sheets. In large bowl, combine rolled oats, margarine and boiling water; let stand 10 minutes. Stir in cornmeal, sugar, bouillon, milk, cheese and egg. Mix well. Add flour 1 level cup at a time, mixing well after each addition to form a stiff dough.
On a floured surface, knead in the remaining flour until dough is smooth and no longer sticky (3 to 4 minutes). Roll or pat out dough to 1/2 inch thickness; cut with cookie cutter. Place 1 inch apart on greased cookie sheets.

Bake at 325' F. for 35 to 45 minutes or until golden brown. Cool completely. Store loosely covered. Makes 3 1/2 dozen large dog biscuits or 8 dozen small dog biscuits.

***If you don't plan on using these cookies immediately, be sure to store them in the refrigerator or freeze well-wrapped because they can get moldy if left around unrefrigerated too long.

Crunchy Oatmeal Biscuits


3 c Whole wheat flour
3 c Oatmeal
1/2 c Regular wheat germ
6 T melted bacon drippings (my dogs prefer the bacon drippings!) or margarine
1/4 c Molasses
1 c evaporated milk
1 c water

Mix dry ingredients together. Add remaining ingredients and blend until well mixed. Dough will be stiff. Chill for 1/2 hour. Take rounded teaspoons of dough and roll into balls. Flatten and place on a lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake at 300 degrees F for 1 hour.

Faux Milk Bone Biscuits

Forget those boxed biscuits! Show your dogs you *really* love em by substituting these tasty treats. Betcha you pooch won't even notice!

3/4 c Hot water or meat juices (Gotta go with the meat juices!)
1/2 c margarine
1/2 c powdered milk
1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp sugar
1 eggs
3 c whole wheat flour

***Note: for sugar free biscuits decrease margarine to 1/3 cup and do not add sugar.

In large bowl pour hot water over margarine. Stir in powdered milk, salt, and egg. Add flour, 1/2 c at a time mixing well after each addition. Knead 3 to 4 stiff dough. Pat or roll to 1/2 inch thickness and cut. Bake at 325 degrees F for 50 minutes. Allow to cool and dry out until hard.

Justadog Biscuits Another simple, yet tasty recipe for your favorite canine pooch!

2 1/2 c whole wheat flour
1/2 c powdered milk
1 tsp salt
1 tsp sugar
6 tbsp margarine
1 egg
1/2 cup cold water
***Note: Add 3 tbsp of liver powder or chicken or beef boullion for a meaty flavor.

Mix ingredients dry ingredients then slowly add water. Knead for 3 minutes. Dough should form a ball. Roll to 1/2" thick and cut into dog bone or other shapes. Bake on a lightly greased cookie sheet for 30 minutes at 350 F.

4-H Critter Cookies This recipe is used by a 4-H club who distributes them to dogs in the area.

2 C Whole Wheat Flour
1/2 C Wheat Germ
1/2 C Instant non fat milk
1/2 C water, 1/3 vegetable oil
1 large egg
2 Tbsp beef boullion granules
1 Tbsp brown sugar

Preheat oven to 300. In large mixing bowl at low speed, beat flour, wheat germ, milk powder, water, oil, egg, boullion, and brown sugar until well blended. On a lightly floured surface, knead dough for 1-2 minutes. Roll dough to 1/4" thickness. Cut into bone shaped treats. Bake on ungreased baking sheets for 45 min. or until brown and crisp. Cool treats on wire racks. Store in an airtight container in a cool dry place. Will keep up to 3 months.

Fancy Fiesta Cookies

These fancy cookies should keep your pet happy until the last crumb is licked off of your hand.

4 c wheat flour
1/2 c corn meal
1 medium egg
2 Tbsp vegetable oil
1 3/4 c water
1 c sun dried tomatoes
1 Tbsp minced onion
1 Tbsp minced garlic
1 Tbsp cilantro

Preheat oven to 375. Combine all dry ingredients. Next add egg, veg oil, water, and remaining ingredients to the dry mix. Continue to add addtional water, if needed, 1 Tblsp at a time, stirring until dough forms a ball. Then knead by hand. Roll into 1/2 inch thick roll. Cut out into bone or other fun shapes. Bake for approx 50 mins on baking sheet sprayed with non-stick cooking spray.

Chicken Liver Cookies

Muzzle lickin' good!

2 c Flour
1 c wheat germ
1/2 c chicken broth
1 c Cooked, chopped chicken livers
3 Tbsp vegetable oil
1 egg, slightly beaten
2 Tbsp chopped parsley

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Combine flour and wheat germ. In separate bowl, beat egg with oil, then add broth and parsley, mix well. Add dry ingredients to bowl a little at a time, stirring well. Fold in chicken livers and mix well. Dough will be firm. Turn out dough on lightly floured board and knead briefly. Roll out 1/2 " thick and cut into shapes. Place on greased cookie sheet 1" apart. Bake 15 min. or until firm. Store in refrigerator.

Syracuse Dog Training Biscuits A great biscuit to use while training your dog. For all of you treat spitters out there, give this biscuit a try.

2 eggs, beaten
5 c whole wheat flour
1 c powdered milk
2 t garlic powder
4 Tbsp molasses
4 Tbsp oil
1 lb chicken livers, boiled until tender so that at least 1 c of the liquid remains.

Combine all the ingredients (mash the livers with a fork, then add the cup of liquid). Roll out and cut with cookie cutters. Bake at 350 degrees F until brown and crispy, about 30 minutes (depends on how thin you roll them out).

Vegetable Flavored Doggie Biscuits

Give this recipe a try if you want to give your dog a tasty, meatless treat!

1 1/2 c Whole wheat flour
1 c Rye or Buckwheat flour
1/2 c Powdered milk
1/2 t Salt
6 Tbsp margarine
1 Egg
1 tsp Brown sugar
1/2 c Ice water
1 c pureed vegetables OR 2 to 3 T dried soup greens

Combine dry ingredients and cut in drippings or margarine until mixture resembles cornmeal. Mix in egg, vegetables, and enough water to make mixture form a ball. With fingers, pat dough out to 1/2" thick on a lightly floured board. Cut with knife or cookie cutter and place on a lightly oiled cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees F for 25 to 30 minutes. Cool on racks.
